Which gaming laptops have the quietest fans and which have the loudest? Are you looking for a quiet gaming laptop? This page contains the fan noise of all laptops thatI have reviewed.
How to test for laptop fan noise
The tests are conducted with a Digitech QM-1589 placed approximately 30 cm / 12″ away from the laptop. This does not measure pitch, only decibel values.
The background noise within the test environment is around 31-32 dB, unfortunately it can vary slightly and I didn't record the background noise on every laptop while idling, so the idling results aren't the best.
Idle results are tested without anything happening: the machine is idle for at least 30 minutes in the lowest available power mode.
The stress test results are determined by running the Aida64 CPU stress test, checking only the "CPU stress" along with the Unigine Heaven GPU benchmark running simultaneously at maximum settings. This combination represents the worst case, so the noise levels below also represent and do not represent the worst case under heavy CPU and GPU loads
Test Results Explained
You can use the table to search for specific models or order them from largest to smallest. By default, all laptops tested are ranked from quietest to loudest based on the loudest fan noise.
Many laptops have different performance modes that affect fan speed. Although these aren't global, I've tried to specify the noise level under the stress test for low/high/maximum fan modes.
If a laptop does not have all of these modes, the existing lower mode data point is repeated. For example, if the laptop only has one fan speed, the stress test shows the same value three times. If a laptop has more than 3 performance modes, I always add the lowest and highest performance mode.
The main point is that these are levels where you can lock the fan regardless of the load and should never run higher regardless of the workload. However, lower values are definitely possible with a lower load, and these also represent the worst results.
The reported decibel levels are the maximum within the recorded period. You can listen to all the fan noise recordings yourself on theFull review videos on YouTube.
